What Are Snap Rings and Where Are They Used?

Snap rings, also called retaining rings or circlips, are small spring-metal fasteners that sit in a machined groove to keep bearings, gears, pulleys, and other parts from moving out of place.

What Is a Snap Ring?

A snap ring is a thin, C-shaped retaining clip designed to fit into a groove on a shaft or inside a bore. Once seated, it creates a mechanical shoulder that helps stop a part from sliding sideways. In many repairs, the snap ring is not the biggest part in the assembly, but it can be the part that keeps everything located correctly.

You may also see snap rings called retaining rings, circlips, C-clips, or lock rings. The names vary by industry and region, but the job is usually the same: hold a component in position without using a threaded fastener.

Internal vs External Snap Rings

The two most common styles are internal and external snap rings.

Internal snap rings fit inside a housing, bore, cylinder, or bearing seat. They press outward into an internal groove. To install or remove one, the ring usually needs to be compressed so it can clear the bore.

External snap rings fit around the outside of a shaft, axle, pin, or spindle. They press inward into an external groove. To install or remove one, the ring usually needs to be expanded just enough to pass over the shaft.

This is why snap ring pliers are not all the same. Internal pliers and external pliers move in opposite ways, and convertible pliers switch between those two actions. Using the wrong action can make the ring slip, overstretch, or fly out of control.

Where Are Snap Rings Used in Automotive Repair?

Snap rings are common anywhere a part needs to be retained while still allowing compact assembly and service access. In automotive work, they may appear in:

  • Transmission shafts and gear assemblies, where gears, bearings, or thrust washers need axial retention.
  • Wheel hubs, CV joints, and axle components, where clips help retain shafts, bearings, or related hardware.
  • Brake, clutch, and hydraulic cylinders, where internal clips can hold pistons, seals, or spring assemblies in a bore.
  • Pulleys, pumps, and small engine accessories, where space is limited and a threaded retainer would be too bulky.
  • Motors, compressors, and general mechanical equipment, especially around bearings and rotating parts.

The exact location depends on the vehicle and assembly design, so always check the service information before removing a snap ring from a safety-related or spring-loaded component.

Why the Groove Matters

A snap ring only works properly when it is seated in the correct groove. The groove gives the ring a place to lock, and the ring gives the retained part a shoulder to push against.

If the groove is dirty, damaged, rounded, or packed with corrosion, the ring may look installed but not fully seated. That can allow the retained part to move under load. Before reinstalling a snap ring, clean the groove and inspect both the groove and the ring. If the ring is bent, stretched, cracked, badly rusted, or no longer springs back, replace it.

How Snap Rings Are Removed and Installed

Most snap rings have small holes or lugs near the open ends. Snap ring pliers use small tips that fit into those holes, giving controlled force to expand or compress the ring.

For best results, match three things before you start:

  • Ring type: internal or external.
  • Tip size: the plier tips should fit the ring holes without being too loose or too large.
  • Tip angle: straight tips work when access is clear, while 45-degree or 90-degree tips help in recessed or blocked areas.

Apply only enough force to clear the groove. Over-expanding or over-compressing the ring can permanently deform the spring steel and weaken its holding power.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not pry the ring out with a screwdriver unless the service procedure specifically allows it. Prying can scratch the groove, distort the ring, or send it across the shop.

Do not reuse a damaged snap ring. A ring that has lost its spring tension may install easily, but it may not retain the component correctly.

Do not assume all retaining clips work the same way. Some applications use E-clips, spiral rings, wire retainers, or specialty clips that require a different removal method.

Do not install the ring halfway. After installation, rotate or gently probe the ring to confirm it is fully seated in the groove before reassembling the rest of the component.

When Should You Replace a Snap Ring?

Replace a snap ring when it is visibly bent, stretched, cracked, corroded, heat-damaged, or loose in its groove. You should also replace it if the vehicle service manual marks it as a one-time-use part. Snap rings are inexpensive compared with the damage that can happen if a bearing, shaft, or piston assembly moves out of position.
